– For your consideration is 1999 Jester Enterprises Hydra All Tube Splitter, owned and used by Dave Grohl of The Foo Fighters.
– This very rare 100% all original example was notably part of Grohl’s rig during their 2000 US Tour in support of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. It still retains the original yellow gaffer’s tape used to denote which channel was designated for which amp!
– The only other example which seems to have been advertised for sale, belonged to Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready. These 6-channel rack mount variants seem to have only been produced for big touring acts that had the money to splurge on this esoteric and over-built piece.
– Grohl essentially used the Whirlwind A/B/Y box to shift between his VOX AC-30 clean tone, and his Mesa Boogie’s / Marshall’s overdriven and distorted tone. Each side of the drum riser had one of each amp so that he could create duplicate signals, resutling in consistent volume and sound across the entirety of the stage.
– Guitar.com did a write up on Grohl’s rig during this tour, and as can be seen, this EXACT Hydra is pictured in the center.
