– For your consideration is this vintage 1947 National Model 1155 Jumbo Flat Top acoustic guitar.
– This 1st year example, serial number V11612, is in very nice 100% all original condition. It includes the original ‘Guarantee Bond’ card (hand-dated August 16, 1947), original dealer’s leaflet, and the original Indigo alligator chipboard case.
– This model famously features an X-braced body made by Gibson. The braces within are scalloped, just like those found in a concurrently produced Gibson J-45 and J-50 models. The Gibson body is attached to a National made neck which does not have a truss rod. The two are glued in place via a dove tail joint, which is unique to the 1st batch of the National 1155 jumbo acoustics made between 1947-1949. Thereafter, this model changes dramatically to incorporate a bolt-on neck construction.
– This is a stunning example with respect to condition and sound. It remains structurally perfect, with no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs. Quite objectively it sounds better than any late-’40s Gibson Jumbo I’ve owned, and that’s most certainly because the neck is a very large completely solid piece of mahogany. This guitar is more resonant and clear than your typical J-45, and it’s not nearly as expensive.
– After extensive research, this is the earliest example of an 1155 to be documented online, and it just so happens to be preserved in excellent cosmetic condition.
– Neck measurements: 1.771″ nut width, .905″ neck depth at 1st fret, 1.164″ depth at 12th fret.
