– For your consideration is vintage 1979 dbx Model 100 “Boom Box” Sub Harmonix Synthesizer unit.
– This very nice 100% all original example, serial number 10906, is in studio-ready perfect working order.
– This vintage analog Boom Box generates a “sub harmonic” tone to fill out the 50-100Hz bass range that is often lacking on analog media such as vinyl or tape. The unit processes the bass frequencies already present in the 100-200Hz range, synthesizes a signal that is one octave lower, and blends that into the original signal. The Boom Box’s circuitry tracks much faster and tighter than more familiar guitar-oriented octave generators, and creates a full, rounded low end that doesn’t show any signs of being artificially enhanced.
– Two controls on the front provide a level control for the generated harmonic and a bass boost that raises the original bass signal to better blend the harmonics with the original signal. The front panel also features a “SYNTHESIZE” LED which flickers to indicate when the harmonic generation has been triggered.
– Inputs and outputs are all in the form of RCA jacks on the rear of the unit for use with professional or home audio applications. A switch on the back activates the unit’ internal crossover, directing bass frequencies to a separate pair of RCA jacks ideal for driving a dedicated subwoofer. In addition, a recessed trimpot allows adjustment of the unit’s bass sensitivity.
– Indigo Ranch, nestled on 60-acres in the hills of Malibu, California, operated from 1974 until 2006, under the guidance and obsessions of Richard Kaplan. Clients took advantage of his meticulously built studio, hundreds of effects pedals, 400 guitar amps, and rare Aengus console. Artists as diverse as Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Olivia Newton John, Jeff Lorber, Korn, Sepultura, and Limp Bizkit all made albums at Indigo Ranch. Vice published an article on how Indigo became the “improbable birthplace of Nu-Metal,” and Tape-Op Magazine interviewed Richard Kaplan, Ross Robinson, and others about the numerous important albums made at Indigo Ranch over the many decades it actively changed the landscape of both music and culture.
